The gym hall and upstairs mezzanine incandescence lights were replaced in May 2021 by new energy efficient LED lighting. The project was supported by Zero Waste Scotland with a 30% financial contribution to the overall installation cost of over £14,000. It is anticipated that there will be a 33% saving on the electricity bills with an estimated 7% reduction of our carbon emissions.
Changing old blown strip lights was a major task involving the use of scaffolding – with LED lights having a much longer lifespan, the need to replace them will be vastly reduced.
Ward Road Gym was delighted to host The Scottish Primary Schools Championships on the place on Sunday 28 November 2021 at Ward Road, Dundee. The organisers were very happy with our facilities and hope to use us again. The slightly disappointing entry in the boys event was more than made up for the fact that the girls entry was more than double than that of the previous event and the numbers in total allowed plenty of matches, both in the singles and doubles, which meant the youngsters were all in action most of the day.
The Boys’ title went to Drumchapel’s Joe Mulhern who defeated all opponents comfortably in straight sets. Victor Chen (Aberdeen) defeated the strongly fancied Bohao Chen to claim the runner-up spot while Bohao and Mathew Pszonka will make up the team of four representing Scotland at the British Primary Schools Championships in April 2022.
In the Girls’ event the nine players played a round robin over three tables and top seed Edinburgh’s Nichole Lee was in superb form, again not dropping an end throughout. Kiishi Adekola was runner-up in the group while Eilidh Tait and Padma Unman were placed third and fourth respectively.
The Doubles trophies are once again heading north to Aberdeen with Victor Chen and Mathew Pszonka taking the Boy’s title and Kiishi Adekola and Nikki Mo the one for the Girls.
Thanks very much to the players, coaches and their families for making the event so enjoyable and also to Ward Road for accommodating us late in the day.
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our past Chairman, Sandy Elrick. Sandy was a gentleman and an inspiration to us all.
Sandy’s funeral is on Tuesday 1st October at the Dundee Crematorium (2.30pm)

Sandy
was the main driving force behind the saving and regeneration of Ward
Road Gym. The building, which had no heating and very little else
going for it, was being used 5 nights a week by many groups including
D&DTTA. In 2001 the council indicated that they intended to sell
off the building – the likelihood being that it would have ended
as yet another pub or club in the city centre. Sandy pulled together
a group of people and formed a Charitable Company to manage the way
forward and got an agreement from Dundee City Council that they would
lease the building to this new company. After many meetings with the
City Council and a lot of fundraising (£335,000), enough money was
raised to provide the facilities that we all enjoy today.
Sandy
had table tennis running through his veins. A league player, mostly
with Telecoms TTC and an active D&DTTA committee member over
many years. He served on the committee of the Scottish Table Tennis
Association from 1986 to 1998 and as Chairman between 1995 and 1998.
Sandy led the team that organised and ran the Commonwealth Table
Tennis Championships in the Kelvin Hall in 1997. He was also
qualified International Umpire.
At
local level we all have fond memories of Sandy, from his ritual
removal of his tracksuit bottoms at the last minute prior to his
match starting, to his nimble footwork kicking the table tennis ball
against the wall to achieve a bounce that would allow him to catch
the ball rather than struggle to pick it up off the floor.
He
only stopped playing the game a couple of years ago at the age of 83
– finding that recovering from the efforts of a match was beginning
to stretch to 2 or 3 days.
Nothing
was too much trouble for Sandy, always willing to help and give
advice — he’ll be sadly missed.
Nomads Badminton Club are one of Dundee’s oldest and most established clubs. We have had teams playing in Dundee leagues since the 1950’s and have a great record of success both as teams and individuals who have gone on to represent Scotland at age group and senior levels. We welcome new members, both senior and junior, and have a number of different sessions at different venues to accommodate all ages and abilities. Saturday the 16th of March sees the annual Directors’ sports day. This year Netball kicks us off at 10:00am. Between the semi-finals and final, Taekwondo will do one of their excellent exhibitions. After the netball finals, at approximately 1pm we change sports to Table Tennis, the day will finish at approximately 4pm. Spectators are most welcome. Tea coffee and light refreshments will be available all day. There is no charge.
